National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Reforms
The NYSC scheme was established to help reconstruct, reconcile, and rebuild Nigeria following the Nigerian Civil War. The challenging events in our national history led to the creation of the National Youth Service Corps by Decree No. 24 on May 22, 1973. This decree highlighted the purpose of the NYSC:
"To encourage and develop common ties among the youths of Nigeria and promote national unity."
As a developing country, Nigeria faces numerous challenges associated with underdevelopment, including poverty, mass illiteracy, a severe shortage of highly skilled manpower, and an uneven distribution of the skilled individuals we do have. Additionally, there is a significant lack of adequate socio-economic infrastructure and housing.
NYSC reforms aim to address these issues by fostering unity and cooperation among Nigerian youths while contributing to national development.
