Mr. Olusanya Olubunmi was born on July 6, 1967, in Akure, Ondo State, Nigeria. He completed his primary education at Saint David’s Primary School, Akure (1973-1979), and his secondary education at Independence Grammar School, Ondo, and Aquinas College, Akure, graduating in 1984. He earned a B.Sc. in Microbiology from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, in 1989 and an M.Sc. in Microbiology from the University of Lagos in 1993.
A distinguished professional, Mr. Olubunmi is a fellow of the Waste Management Society of Nigeria (WAMASON) and a member of the Nigerian Environmental Society (NES).
He began his career as a Microbiologist at Sona Breweries Plc, Sango-Ota, Ogun State, in August 1993. In June 1996, he joined the Federal Environmental Protection Agency (FEPA) as a Senior Environmental Scientist and transitioned to the Federal Ministry of Environment in June 1999. He advanced to the role of Director in 2019, where he served as the Director of Pollution Control and Environmental Health. During his tenure, he coordinated the development of several key policy documents, including the National Policies on Solid Waste Management (2020), Plastic Waste Management (2020), Waste Battery Management (2022), and Antimicrobial Resistance for the Environment Sector (2023). He also facilitated the development of a Circular Economy Roadmap for Nigeria in April 2024.
Mr. Olubunmi has represented Nigeria in various United Nations Environment Programmes (UNEP) and the African Region in several UNEP subsidiary bodies.
On June 28, 2024, he was appointed Permanent Secretary of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and assumed the role of Permanent Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Youth Development on July 25, 2024.
